Boys Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball · Mavericks Sweep Pre-Season Tournament

Both the boys and girls basketball teams had an impressive weekend as each team took first place in the Riverdale Pre-Season Basketball Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.
The girls began the tournament with an exciting comeback win over the visiting Chemawa Braves.  Capping an eleven point come back in the final two minutes to send the game into overtime was Junior Zoe Zurasky, with a buzzer beating three pointer.  The Mavs rode their momentum into overtime and won 53-49.  In the championship game coach Mark Scarlett the Mavs took control of the game in the second half and never looked back, defeating the Scio Loggers 41-26, to bring home the tournament trophy.
In similar fashion the boys played a back and forth battle with the visiting Scio Braves on Friday night.  The Mavericks jumped out to an early lead but with players in foul trouble the Braves battled back to take a third quarter lead.  Riverdale stormed back and took control of the game mid-way through the fourth quarter and pulled out a 54-49 win on the first day of the tournament.  On Saturday the Mavericks faced off against the Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates and jumped on them early.  It was an impressive win for coach Paul Henderson and the Mavericks as they ultimately took the Riverdale Pre-Season Tournament Championship with a 54-27 victory over the Pirates.
Congratulations to both or our boys and girls basketball teams on the impressive tournament victories this past weekend.
Riverdale will host their annual Holiday Basketball Tournament on Dec. 28-29 at Riverdale HS. Game times begin at 3 PM each day.
